According to The Javelin Strategy & Research Center, identity theft affected almost 10 million victims in 2008—a 22 percent increase from 2007.
Besides using passwords that contain a mix of numbers and letters, keeping your mother’s maiden name and social security number a secret and reviewing your credit card bills each and every month, experts also recommend shredding all documents that contain personal information.
To help you keep your identity to yourself, join us this weekend for a special ‘Secure Your ID Day’! Hosted by the Better Business Bureau and sponsored by Michigan First Credit Union, “Secure Your ID Day” will take place from 8-11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 in the parking lot of our Lathrup Village headquarters, located at 27000 Evergreen Road, at the intersection of 11 Mile Road and I-696.
Bring up to three bags/boxes of documents to be shredded and disposed of at no charge by document destruction company SHRED-IT. There will be a $10 per bag/box charge for those exceeding the FREE promotion. These fees will be donated to the BBB Educational Foundation which provides consumer education materials and programs to the public.
